The Aegagropila linnaei is a type of green algae commonly referred to as the Marimo Moss Ball or Lake Ball. Although it resembles a typical moss, it is not a true moss but filamentous green algae. You can observe this plant free-floating on unattached mats, attached carpets, or in ball form. Marimo Moss is a slow-growing species that is popular for decorating aquariums. This algae is also excellent for serving as a grazing ground for shrimp tanks.
How to keep Aegagropila Linnaei.
Humidity
This plant needs special care because it loves high humidity levels of 60-80% or more. The best way to achieve this is by placing a humidifier near the plant. Daily misting is also essential! Make sure the room has good ventilation.
Temperature
Marimo Moss is indigenous to cool lakes ranging between 43 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. As temperatures begin to rise, it’s best to move them to a cooler area. Leaving the algae to overheat will result in them falling apart.
Fertilizer
Your Marimo will benefit from supplemental CO2 and fertilizer; however, it is not necessary. If your moss ball is used in shrimp tanks, we recommend skipping this step as high levels of CO@ and Copper are extremely hazardous for shrimp.
Pruning
Marimo Moss is very easy to care for and maintain. Remove and clean the moss balls regularly, once or twice per month, taking care to gently wash away any dirt and debris from the thread-like algae filaments. If the ball form begins falling apart or changing shape, simply roll it in your hands to regain the distinct spherical shape.
Toxicity
The Marimo Moss is not considered toxic to humans or animals. However, as a freshwater algae, it is not exactly edible for people and pets. So long as your Marimo stays in your aquariums and tanks, it will serve as a lovely plant decoration for your home.
