Agave scabra, also known as rough leaved agave, is a member of the subfamily Agavoideae.

Care Guide

💧 Water

Rough agave is well-suited for dry conditions. Water it only when the soil is slightly damp and drains well, keeping an eye out for signs of dehydration, such as soft leaves. Increase watering during the summer months, but reduce it in the fall. When the temperature drops below 10℃, the plant enters dormancy; at this time, stop watering and keep the agave warm. Resume watering in the spring once temperatures rise above 20℃.

☀️ Light Full sun

Originating from arid regions, Rough agave performs best in full sun; its native habitat is marked by intense sunlight and scant shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, giving it some flexibility in its growth.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 20–37.8°C

Rough agave does best in warm conditions and needs elevated temperatures during the growing season to stimulate growth and metabolism. It favors abundant sunlight, suitable moisture levels, and good airflow. It can be damaged by very low temperatures and by too much watering. Likewise, maintaining balance is important—extremely high temperatures and overly dry conditions should also be avoided.

🌱 Fertilizer

Rough agave only needs light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing in winter and in summer when it is dormant. Use less fertilizer for plants that have been repotted, and wait a couple of months after repotting before feeding. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages flowering.

✂️ Pruning

Agave plants have thick, spiny leaves that form a rosette shape. To maintain their health and appearance, it's best to prune them in early spring. This allows you to remove dead leaves and manage the plant's size, which encourages healthy growth. Regular pruning helps improve airflow, reduces the risk of pests, and prevents overcrowding. This ensures that the plant remains strong and visually appealing throughout its lifecycle.
