A note from PlantMom

Agave americana subsp. americana has moderate resistance to disease but is more vulnerable to high humidity and overwatering. It becomes especially prone to illness if it receives insufficient light and is kept too wet. Regarding care, Agave americana subsp. americana is drought-tolerant and can endure extended intervals without watering. It requires little fertilizer and only occasional pruning. Because of these traits, it is suitable for gardeners of any skill level, particularly for those who prefer low-maintenance plants or who may be away from home for extended periods. It is a good option for people who do not want to devote a lot of time to plant care yet still want an easy-to-maintain plant.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Agave Variegata.

Light

Agave americana subsp. americana, native to arid regions, prospers in full sun; its natural habitat features intense sunlight and very little shade. It will also tolerate partial sun, providing some adaptability in its growth.

Water

Mottled tuberose thrives in dry conditions but needs well-moistened potting soil when watered. During summer, increase the watering frequency, but in the fall, reduce it. In winter, when the plant is dormant at 10°C (50°F), avoid watering entirely. In spring, resume watering once temperatures rise above 20°C (68°F).

Temperature

Agave americana subsp. americana prefers warm conditions and needs elevated temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolism. It does well with plenty of sunlight, suitable moisture levels, and good air circulation. However, it can be damaged by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It is also important to maintain balance and to avoid both excessively high temperatures and overly dry conditions.

Fertilizer

For Agave americana subsp. americana, small applications of fertilizer one to two times a year during the growing season are enough. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Use less fertilizer for plants that have been repotted and wait a couple of months after repotting before you start feeding. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes blooming.

Pruning

The mottled tuberose showcases impressive foliage and requires minimal pruning. For best results, prune in early spring by removing any dead or damaged leaves at their base. Be careful not to cut the central crown, as it is crucial for the plant's growth. Pruning helps improve light and air circulation, boosting the plant's overall health. Consider consulting trustworthy resources for detailed pruning techniques.
