ON THIS PLANT

Amsinckia tessellata is a species of fiddleneck known by the common names bristly fiddleneck, tessellate fiddleneck, checker fiddleneck, and devil's lettuce. The plant is native to dry regions of western North America, more specifically eastern Washington and Idaho, much of California and the Great Basin, to southwest New Mexico (U.S.) and northwest Sonora and Baja California in Mexico, usually below 6,000 feet (1,800 m) elevation. It is a common plant in many types of habitats, including chaparral, oak woodland, xeric scrub, temperate valleys, disturbed areas, and deserts including the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert.

A note from PlantMom

Bristly fiddleneck has strong disease resistance and is generally not prone to illnesses. However, it can be susceptible to pests and diseases present in its surroundings; these infections are usually mild. Regarding care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to maintain a good appearance and healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help encourage flowering. Bristly fiddleneck is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. It may require more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Amsinckia Tessellata.

Light

Bristly fiddleneck comes from bright, open habitats where it does best in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which can be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving character.

Temperature

Bristly fiddleneck can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can increase the likelihood of Bristly fiddleneck dying. In winter, protecting the plant from cold can improve its chances of survival.

Fertilizer

Bristly fiddleneck responds well to regular, dilute fertilizer applications to encourage healthy leaf growth. Fertilize Bristly fiddleneck about once a month during the summer. Nitrogen is essential for foliage, and adding nitrogen-rich fertilizers helps Bristly fiddleneck thrive.
