Araucaria bernieri (Bernier's columnar araucaria) is a species of conifer in the family Araucariaceae. It is found only in New Caledonia at elevations below 700 meters, mainly in the southern part of the main island. It is a large tree reaching 40–50 meters in height, though specimens growing on poorer soil tend to be dwarfed. It is threatened by habitat loss with a wild population of less than 10,000 mature trees, and ongoing decline in remaining populations.
Bernier's araucaria has strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have bloomed. Bernier's araucariat is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not require extensive care experience.
How to keep Araucaria Bernieri.
Light
The natural habitats of Bernier's araucaria, such as forest undergrowths or stony terrains, naturally put it in shaded conditions. It thrives best in partial sunlight but can adjust to complete sunlight or complete shade, thereby illustrating its resilient and adaptable characteristics.
Humidity
This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.
Temperature
Bernier's araucaria originates from regions with a tropical climate, known for their consistently warm and moist conditions. Because of its native habitat, the plant is adapted to handle elevated temperatures and levels of humidity. It does not respond well to abrupt changes in temperature, preferring a constant thermal environment. Therefore, it's crucial to keep the indoor temperature consistent to cater to the plant. Generally, the plant does not do well in colder atmospheres and needs warm conditions to grow. If the surrounding temperature becomes too low, the plant's growth might stall or it could even perish.
Fertilizer
The nutritional needs of Bernier's araucaria are distinctive, and it doesn't require an overabundance of fertilization. The perfect period for fertilizing is during the spring to achieve maximum growth. The provision of additional nutrients enhances its overall well-being, strengthens its defence against pests and illnesses, and encourages its extended longevity.
