Arenaria montana, commonly known as mountain sandwort, is a low-growing perennial plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, it thrives in rocky areas, alpine meadows, and on cliffs. Typically, the plant reaches a height of up to 10 cm and spreads out to about 30 cm. It features narrow, dark green leaves that grow in whorls around the stem. The small flowers, each with five white petals, bloom from late spring through summer. Mountain sandwort is an excellent choice for rock gardens or as ground cover due to its low-growing nature and its ability to tolerate dry conditions once established. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun exposure, though it can also tolerate partial shade. Requiring minimal maintenance, the plant benefits from occasional pruning after flowering and from dividing every few years for optimal growth. Overall, Arenaria montana is a hardy perennial that adds beauty and texture to any garden setting while providing essential habitat for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
