ON THIS PLANT

Aucoumea klaineana, commonly known as Okoume, is a tree species native to tropical West Africa and belongs to the Burseraceae family. This impressive tree can reach heights of up to 30 meters and boasts a straight trunk with a diameter of up to 1 meter. The bark is smooth and grayish-brown in color. The tree's leaves are alternate, simple, and ovate with serrated edges. They are glossy green on the upper surface and paler underneath. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, featuring five petals that range in color from white to pale yellow. The wood of Aucoumea klaineana is highly prized for its lightweight yet strong properties, making it ideal for boat building, furniture making, plywood production, and even musical instruments such as guitars. Aucoumea klaineana thrives in well-drained soils rich in organic matter and can grow under full sun or partial shade. While it can tolerate drought conditions, it prefers moist soils. Due to the high demand for its timber and unsustainable logging practices leading to deforestation, Aucoumea klaineana has been listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 1998. Efforts for sustainable logging have been implemented in countries like Gabon, where the tree grows naturally, but more global action is needed to prevent this valuable species from going extinct.
