ON THIS PLANT

Bambusa bambos, the giant thorny bamboo, Indian thorny bamboo, spiny bamboo, or thorny bamboo, is a species of clumping bamboo native to southern Asia (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Indochina). It is also naturalized in Seychelles, Central America, West Indies, Java, Malaysia, Maluku, and the Philippines.

A note from PlantMom

Giant thorny bamboo is resistant to disease and generally does not tend to get sick. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have bloomed. Giant thorny bamboo is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bambusa Bambos.

Light

Giant thorny bamboo is native to open settings, like sunny fields and woodland peripheries, where there is plenty of light. It flourishes in full sunlight, but can also endure partial sunlight, demonstrating a good adaptability to different levels of sun exposure.

Temperature

Giant thorny bamboo is native to tropical areas known for their hot and humid climate. Naturally, it is acclimatized to thrive in conditions of high temperature and humidity. It does not favor abrupt variations in temperature and thrives best in a consistently warm environment, therefore it is crucial to keep indoor temperature steady. It typically doesn't endure cold temperatures and demands warmer settings to grow. A significant decline in ambient temperature could halt its growth or result in its death.

Fertilizer

The large spiky bamboo needs extra nourishment to encourage robust new development. In the spring, putting some organic compost near the plant's base can suitably supply the needed nutrients. The use of fertilizer contributes to intense growth and strengthens the plant's ability to ward off diseases and pests.
