ON THIS PLANT

Bambusa lako, known as Timor black bamboo, is a large species of bamboo originating from the island of Timor; its black culms may reach 21 m (69 ft) in height. A 2000 molecular study places it as closely related to the similar Indonesian species Gigantochloa atroviolacea , from which it was separated in 1997; it may soon be placed in that genus. Bambusa lako can only be grown in climates that are mostly frost free.

A note from PlantMom

Timor black bamboo has strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. Care-wise, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering; mature specimens typically do not require pruning, while smaller plants should be pruned after they have bloomed. Timor black bamboo is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bambusa Lako.

Light

Timor black bamboo originates from habitats like forest understories or rocky sites where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable and hardy character.

Temperature

Timor black bamboo comes from tropical areas, where the climate is typically warm and humid. For that reason, it is well suited to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature swings and prefers a steady temperature, so avoiding fluctuations indoors is important. It generally cannot endure cold conditions and needs higher temperatures to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Timor black bamboo benefits from extra nutrients to encourage healthy new growth. In spring, spreading compost around the plant’s base is an effective way to supply the nutrients it needs. Fertilizing supports vigorous growth and helps the plant resist diseases and pests.
