Begonia manicata is a species of flowering plant in the family Begoniaceae, native to Mexico and Central America. It was collected from the Veracruz moist forests by Jean Jules Linden, and later described in 1842. The variety 'Aureo-maculata' has cream variegations in the foliage, and is called the leopard begonia.
Begonia manicata shows good resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to disease. However, it can be prone to leaf spots when light and ventilation are poor and watering is excessive. The plant's care level is regarded as easy, since it only needs regular watering and requires little other attention. Begonia manicata is appropriate for people who don't have some time and energy to spend on routine care.
How to keep Begonia Manicata.
Light
Begonia manicata is native to habitats like forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, showing its versatile and hardy nature.
Temperature
Begonia manicata comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Therefore it is adapted to high temperatures and moisture. It is sensitive to sudden temperature shifts and prefers a consistent thermal environment, so avoid temperature fluctuations indoors. It usually cannot tolerate cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.
Fertilizer
Begonia manicata requires the most fertilizer during its active growth phase, which occurs mainly in spring, summer, and early fall. Fertilizing is needed to supply essential nutrients the soil may lack, supporting healthy root and stem development as well as the attractive foliage, a key feature of this particular plant.
Pot & Repot
When repotting Begonia manicata, select a pot that is 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger and has good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly below the rim of the pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place the plant in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
