ON THIS PLANT

Begonia ulmifolia, the elm-leaf begonia, is a species of flowering plant in the family Begoniaceae. It is native to South America; Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, the Guianas, and eastern Brazil, and introduced to Mauritius, Réunion, and the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. Cultivated for its ornamental foliage more than its flowers, it is suitable for green roofs in hot and humid areas.

A note from PlantMom

The elm-leaf begonia is generally resistant to disease and is not usually prone to illnesses. However, it can develop leaf spots if light and ventilation are inadequate or if watering is excessive. Its care level is considered easy, since it mainly requires regular watering and little other attention. The elm-leaf begonia is suitable for people who lack the time and energy to devote to frequent care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Begonia Ulmifolia.

Light

Elm-leaf begonia grows naturally in places like forest understories or rocky sites, where it receives natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable, hardy nature.

Temperature

Elm-leaf begonia comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Consequently, it is well adapted to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a steady temperature, so avoiding temperature fluctuations indoors is important. It typically cannot withstand cold conditions and requires warmer temperatures for growth. If the surrounding temperature drops too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Elm-leaf begonia needs the most fertilizer during its active growth period, which occurs mainly in spring, summer, and early fall. Fertilization supplies essential nutrients that may be missing from the soil, supporting healthy root and stem development and producing attractive foliage, a key characteristic of this plant.

Pot & Repot

When repotting an Elm-leaf begonia, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball is slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place it in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
