Description

Source: leafsnap

Brahea edulis, the Guadalupe palm or palma de Guadalupe, is a palm endemic to Guadalupe Island, Mexico, although a few stands have been planted elsewhere. It is a fan palm which grows 4.50 to 13 metres (15 to 43 ft) tall. It grows on the island between 400 and 1,000 metres (1,300 and 3,300 ft) above mean sea level (ASL), with this altitudinal zonation producing one of the few fog oases present in North America.

Care Guide

💧 Water
☀️ Light Full sun

Guadalupe palm is native to open habitats, such as sunlit meadows and forest margins, which provide plenty of light. It performs best in full sun but can also withstand partial sun, showing good adaptability to different light conditions.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 20–37.8°C

Guadalupe palm is quite adaptable to heat, tolerating high temperatures and wide temperature fluctuations. In hot conditions, attention should be paid to watering and providing adequate shade to prevent sunburn. Conversely, the Guadalupe palm is fairly sensitive to cold; it can endure some chill, but very cold conditions may cause frost damage.

🌱 Fertilizer

To encourage healthy growth, fertilize your Guadalupe palm in early spring. Regular feeding improves the plant’s overall health, producing vigorous growth, greater resilience in challenging conditions, and better resistance to pests and diseases. Maintain a specific fertilization schedule for your Guadalupe palm to keep its foliage vibrant, richly colored, and lush in appearance.

🪴 Pot & Repot
✂️ Pruning

The Guadalupe palm is characterized by its fan-shaped fronds and sturdy trunk. To promote healthy growth and improve its appearance, it is advisable to prune in early spring, focusing on removing yellowing or damaged leaves. However, be careful not to over-prune, as this can cause stress to the tree. Regular maintenance is key to keeping the Guadalupe palm vibrant and helps reduce the risk of disease caused by dead fronds.
