ON THIS PLANT

Bromus scoparius, the broom brome, is a species of flowering plant in the family Poaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean, Crimea, the Middle East, the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Xinjiang in China, and on to the northwest Indian Subcontinent, and has been introduced to Chile, California, a few locales in the eastern US, and southeast China. A somewhat weedy annual, it prefers to grow in grasslands.

A note from PlantMom

Broom brome shows strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. As for care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Broom bromet is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, like a garden or deck, and does not need much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bromus Scoparius.

Light

Broom brome comes from bright, open habitats where it does best in full sun. It can tolerate partial sun but prefers direct sunlight for optimal growth. This annual or biennial plant is recognized for its sun-loving habit.

Temperature

Broom brome can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be restricted by various combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the chance of Broom brome dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can increase the plant's survival rate.
