A note from PlantMom

Old world hairsedge is fairly disease-resistant and generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. When placed outdoors, it needs minimal watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be trimmed after they have finished blooming. Old world hairsedget is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not need much experience in plant care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bulbostylis Barbata.

Light

Old world hairsedge comes from bright, open habitats and flourishes in full sun. It can tolerate partial sun but favors direct sunlight for the best growth. This plant, which may be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving habits.

Water

Old World hairsedge comes from tropical areas and flourishes in consistently moist environments. To stay healthy, it needs weekly watering, although it can handle brief dry periods. When grown outdoors in humid climates, the plant benefits from natural rainfall, which reduces the need for extra watering.

Temperature

Old world hairsedge comes from tropical areas, where the climate is generally warm and humid. Therefore, it is adapted to high temperatures and moisture. It is sensitive to abrupt temperature changes and prefers a steady thermal environment, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It typically cannot tolerate cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, growth may stop or the plant may die.

Pruning

Old World hairsedge is a resilient perennial that thrives in sandy or rocky soils. Pruning in early spring promotes healthy growth by removing dead stems and improving air circulation. Regular trimming helps maintain dense foliage and vitality, which enhances flowering, extends the plant's lifespan, and preserves its aesthetic appeal.
