ON THIS PLANT

Bulbostylis capillaris is a species of sedge known by the common names densetuft hairsedge and threadleaf beakseed. It is native to much of North America, South America and the West Indies from Canada to Bolivia.

A note from PlantMom

Common hairsedge is resistant to disease and is generally not prone to illness. In terms of care, the plant is fairly low-maintenance. Planted outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Common hairsedge is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bulbostylis Capillaris.

Light

Common hairsedge hails from sunny, open habitats, flourishing best under full sun. It can endure partial sun, but it favors direct sunlight for maximum growth. This plant, which is both annual and biennial, is renowned for its affinity for sunlight.

Temperature

Common hairsedge possesses the capability to adjust to various temperature settings, however, the mix of water and heat conditions might restrict its distribution. It flourishes optimally in the summer under warm weather conditions with sufficient rain or irrigation. Extended periods of overcast and rainy conditions, along with extended high temperatures, elevate the chances of the Common hairsedge perishing. During the winter, appropriate safeguards against the cold can enhance the survival odds of the plant.

Pruning

Common hairsedge thrives in well-drained soil and full sunlight. To promote healthy growth and enhance air circulation, prune the plant from early to late spring by trimming away any dead or damaged stems. Instead of heavy pruning, perform light, regular trims to improve its appearance and preserve the plant’s natural shape.
