Camellia azalea, native to the Ehuangzhang Provincial Nature Reserve in Yangchun City, Guangdong, China, is a national first-class protected plant in China. The Chinese name of Camellia azalea is 杜鹃叶山茶/Rhododendron leaf camellia, because of its rhododendron-like leaf shape. Compared with other camellia species, the flower of Camellia azalea is more like Rhododendron, so it is commonly known as 杜鹃红山茶/Rhododendron red camellia. It is also commonly known as 四季紅山茶/Four Seasons Red Camellia or 四季茶花/Four Seasons Camellia, because it can flower throughout the year, July-September is the most prosperous period of flowering, which is different from the habit of Camellia flowering in winter.
Camellia azalea has strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Camellia azaleat is suitable for anyone who has an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and it does not demand a lot of care experience.
How to keep Camellia Azalea.
Light
Camellia azalea occurs naturally in habitats like forest understories or rocky sites, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, showing its hardiness and versatility.
Water
Camellia azalea, originating from humid environments, thrives best with consistent moisture and moderate humidity. To maintain the right conditions, water the plant every 2-3 weeks, ensuring the soil remains lightly moist. During its growing season, it's important to synchronize watering with local rainfall patterns for optimal blooming.
Temperature
Camellia azalea is highly adaptable to a wide range of climatic conditions, from scorching summers to chilly winters. However, it still has an ideal temperature range for healthy growth. When temperatures become too high, the plant can suffer from heat and humidity stress, which may lead to its death. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, providing insulation is important to protect the plant.
Fertilizer
Timing is important when fertilizing Camellia azalea. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month until early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
Pruning
The Camellia azalea showcases vibrant flowers and lush foliage. To promote healthy growth and shape the plant, prune it from early to late winter. Remove dead branches and thin out overcrowded areas to improve air circulation. This will enhance blooming and help maintain its structure, ensuring it remains a vigorous specimen in your garden.
