Description
Source: leafsnapCarex stricta is a species of sedge known by the common names upright sedge and tussock sedge. The plant grows in moist marshes, forests and alongside bodies of water. It grows up to 2 feet (0.61 m) tall and 2 feet (0.61 m) wide. When the leaves die, they build on top of or around the living plant, making a "tussock". Widely distributed in and east of the Great Plains, it is one of the most common wetland sedges in eastern North America.Their seeds are carried by the wind. When seeds land, they are eaten by birds such as dark-eyed junco, northern cardinal, wild turkey, and ducks such as mallard and wood duck. The seeds are also eaten by squirrels and other mammals. The plant can also reproduce vegetatively via rhizomes, and often form colonies. It is a larval host to the black dash, the dun skipper, and the eyed brown.
💡 In 1754, Lin Nai established the genus known as "true sedge." This plant is a significant component of China's flora and is the dominant grass species in the lowest layer of many forests. In some areas, true sedge makes up most of the lower vegetation.
Care Guide
💧 Water Twice per week
Upright sedge, which originates from wetlands, thrives in moist environments and can tolerate saturated soils. It does best when watered twice a week and benefits from natural rainwater fluctuations. These variations in moisture levels throughout different seasons support its growth cycles.
☀️ Light Full sun
The upright sedge grows best in full sunlight, though it can persist in somewhat shaded locations. Its native habitat is primarily open wetlands. Insufficient sunlight can limit its growth, while excessive exposure is not a major problem, showing its resilience.
What are the sunlight requirements for Upright Sedge?
Upright Sedge requires full sun, defined as over 6 hours of sunlight daily, to thrive properly. It can also grow in partial sun, which means about 3-6 hours of sunlight per day. Observing how sunlight moves through your garden will help you choose the best spots for your plants, ensuring they have the ideal balance of light and shade.
What are the essential growing conditions for Upright Sedge?
The upright sedge performs best when exposed to daylight fully but can also sustain in slightly shaded areas. It naturally grows in open wetlands, indicating its preference for bright environments. While it can tolerate some shade, inadequate sunlight may hinder its growth, albeit it is relatively resilient to varying sunlight conditions.
How can artificial lighting support indoor Upright Sedge growth?
Indoor plants, including Upright Sedge, may require artificial lighting to ensure optimal growth, especially when natural sunlight is insufficient, such as in winter or less sunny spaces. LED lights are a good choice, providing specific wavelengths needed for plant growth. Full sun plants need 30-50W/sq ft, partial sun plants 20-30W/sq ft, and full shade plants 10-20W/sq ft of artificial light. Proper distance (12-36 inches above the plant) and duration (8-12 hours per day) of light exposure are crucial for simulating natural sunlight conditions.
What are the symptoms of inadequate sunlight for Upright Sedge?
Symptoms of inadequate sunlight in Upright Sedge include smaller new leaves, leggy or sparse growth, early dropping of older leaves, slower or halted growth, lighter-colored new leaves, and conditions such as chlorosis, sunscald, leaf curling, wilting, and leaf scorching. These signs point to either too little or too much exposure to sunlight, affecting the plant's health adversely.
How can I improve my Upright Sedge's exposure to sunlight?
Improving your Upright Sedge's sunlight exposure involves several strategies. For indoor plants, gradually moving them to sunnier locations until they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight or using artificial lighting can be effective. For outdoor plants, finding the optimal sunlight spot and making gradual adjustments is key. Reducing obstructions such as overhanging branches can help increase sunlight access. If plants have suffered from insufficient light, the affected parts may not recover, but new growth should be healthy with improved light exposure.
🌡️ Temperature 0–32.2°C
Upright sedge originates from temperate regions and prefers temperatures between 32 and 90 °F (0 to 32 °C). To ensure healthy growth through seasonal changes, cooler temperatures should be maintained during winter, with warmth gradually increasing throughout spring and summer.
What are the essential care requirements for Upright Sedge (Carex stricta)?
Upright Sedge, native to temperate climates, thrives in a temperature range of 32 to 90 °F (0 to 32 °C). It has strong cold resistance and does not usually require special frost protection. During winter, if temperatures are expected to drop below -35°C, cold protection should be provided by covering the plant with soil or straw. Additionally, watering the plant abundantly before the first freeze in autumn ensures the soil stays moist and helps prevent drought and water scarcity during winter and early spring.
How does low temperature affect Upright Sedge and what are the solutions?
Upright Sedge is cold-tolerant and thrives best when temperatures are above 0°C. It should be kept above -30°C during winter to avoid damage. If temperatures fall below -35°C, there might not be noticeable changes during winter, but a decrease in sprouting, or even no sprouting, might occur in spring. The solution for this is to remove any parts of the plant that have failed to sprout in spring.
What should be done if Upright Sedge experiences high temperatures?
During summer, it's pivotal to keep Upright Sedge below 32°C. Temperatures above 35°C can cause leaves to become lighter, curl, become susceptible to sunburn, and in severe cases, cause wilting and drying of the entire plant. To mitigate high temperature damage, trim away sunburned and dried-up parts. Moving the plant to a location with shade during midday and afternoon sun, or using a shade cloth, can help. Additionally, watering in the morning and evening ensures the soil remains moist.

🪴 Soil 5-6
🌱 Fertilizer
Typically, a single fertilizer application in spring is enough for Upright sedge, though multiple feedings can enhance growth. Apply fertilizer every month to month and a half. Fertilization improves leaf appearance and function, helping maintain even color and a healthy texture. It also encourages root development and nutrient uptake for the plant's long-term health.

✂️ Pruning
Raking up old and dead vegetation from clusters might assist with appearance. It will also recover nicely if you prune it in the fall.
