ON THIS PLANT

Castilla elastica, commonly known as the Mexican rubber tree or the Panama rubber tree, is a large evergreen tree belonging to the Moraceae family. Native to Central America and Mexico, this tree can grow up to 40 meters tall. It has a straight trunk with smooth gray bark that can reach up to 2 meters in diameter. The leaves of Castilla elastica are large, glossy green, and leathery, with prominent veins. They are arranged alternately along the branches. The flowers of this species are small and greenish-yellow. Castilla elastica is well-known for its latex production, which has been utilized by indigenous people for centuries. They used it to make rubber balls, waterproof clothing, and even chewing gum. Today, the latex is still commercially used in various industries, including medicine, construction materials (such as adhesives), and textiles (such as elastic bands). This tree prefers moist soils but can tolerate dry conditions once established. It thrives in full sun or partial shade but cannot withstand frost or temperatures below -2°C. Ecologically, Castilla elastica plays a significant role by providing habitat for wildlife, such as birds and insects, and by contributing to carbon sequestration through its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. Overall, Castilla elastica is an important species both culturally and ecologically. Its numerous uses, combined with its impressive size and year-round interest due to its glossy leaves, make it a valuable addition to any landscape, whether or not it is actively producing latex.
