Cestrum elegans, commonly known as Scarlet Cestrum or Red Cestrum, is a species of flowering plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Native to Central and South America, it has also been introduced to various parts of the world as an ornamental plant. Scarlet Cestrum is a shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. It features glossy green leaves that are 10-15 cm long. The plant produces tubular, bright red flowers with five petals that flare out at the ends. These flowers bloom from late spring through summer, attracting hummingbirds. This plant prefers full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. While it can tolerate drought, it requires regular watering during hot weather for optimal growth. Indigenous people have used Cestrum elegans for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, it should be noted that all parts of this plant are toxic if ingested by humans or animals. Overall, this beautiful shrub adds vibrant color to gardens and provides ecological benefits as a food source for hummingbirds.
