ON THIS PLANT

Conospermum longifolium, commonly known as the long leaf smokebush, is a shrub of the family Proteaceae native to eastern Australia. Found between Ulladulla, Newcastle, New South Wales and the adjacent ranges. The habitat is drier eucalyptus woodlands or heathland.Three sub-species are recognised:

Conospermum longifolium subsp. angustifolium Conospermum longifolium subsp. longifolium Conospermum longifolium subsp. mediale

A note from PlantMom

Smoke bush resists disease well and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of maintenance, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it only needs light watering, and larger specimens usually don't require pruning; smaller plants, however, should be cut back after they finish blooming. Smoke bush is appropriate for anyone who has outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and does not call for extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Conospermum Longifolium.

Light

Smoke bush comes from open habitats, like sunny meadows and the edges of forests, where plenty of light is available. It does best in full sun but can also tolerate partial sun, adapting well to different light conditions.

Temperature

Smoke bush shows strong adaptability to a variety of climate conditions, whether in scorching summers or chilly winters. Still, it has an optimal temperature range for growth. If temperatures become too high, the plant is susceptible to heat and humidity stress, which can lead to its death. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, it is important to use insulation measures to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

Timing is important for fertilizing Smoke bush. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly through early summer. Fertilizer promotes lovely blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth phases.

Pruning

The smoke bush is known for its unique appearance and resilience. To keep it healthy and looking its best, prune it in early spring to remove any weak branches. After it flowers, prune again to improve its shape and encourage denser foliage. This regular pruning enhances airflow, reduces the risk of disease, and contributes to the plant's overall health and attractiveness.
