ON THIS PLANT

Coronilla valentina, the shrubby scorpion-vetch, scorpion vetch or bastard senna, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Coronilla of the legume family Fabaceae, native to the Mediterranean Basin, and introduced into Kenya and the United States. It is an evergreen shrub growing to 80 cm (31 in) tall and wide, with pea-like foliage and fragrant, brilliant yellow flowers in spring and summer, followed by slender pods. Linnaeus observed that the flowers, remarkably fragrant in the daytime, are almost scentless at night. In cultivation it is fairly hardy, but prefers Mediterranean conditions, with shelter and warm sunshine. The subspecies C. valentina subsp. glauca (syn. C. glauca) and its cultivar 'Citrina' have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (confirmed 2017).

A note from PlantMom

Glaucous Scorpion-Vetch is resistant to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding upkeep, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. CARE GUIDE

How to keep Coronilla Glauca.

Light

Glaucous Scorpion-Vetch is native to open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which offer abundant light. It thrives in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Temperature

Glaucous Scorpion-Vetch is quite adaptable to temperature, able to withstand high heat and wide temperature swings. In hot weather, you should ensure proper watering and offer adequate shade to avoid sunburn. Conversely, Glaucous Scorpion-Vetch has limited tolerance to cold; it can endure some chill, but very low temperatures may cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Timing is important when fertilizing Glaucous Scorpion-Vetch. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
