Description

Source: leafsnap

Due to the flower's avian-like shape, this plant's name, which translates from Greek as "crested lark," was chosen. In fact, "Blue Heron" is the name of one of the most well-liked cultivars. Although they rapidly self-sow, they are non-invasive and resistant to deer. The larvae of numerous butterflies can use them as food plants. More than 400 different corydalis species have been identified; the majority are indigenous to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with the greatest diversity of species being found in China, Asia, and the hilly areas of northeast Africa.

Corydalis can easily be multiplied via division in the fall after the last of the petals have faded. Starting corydalis from dried seeds requires some care, but newly acquired seeds germinate easily. In a dry, airtight container, they grow best when stored in the refrigerator for six to eight weeks. After chilling, spread the seeds on the soil's surface at 60 to 65 degrees F (16 to 18 degrees C).

It also favors soil with a pH that is neutral or alkaline. In spring, before the buds start to open, give the plants a shovelful of compost or a light organic fertilizer. Water frequently enough to keep the soil moist. If you want to improve your soil's ability to support plant development and performance, you should do a soil test.

✂️ Pruning

Corydalis will require very little care and attention if the correct circumstances are present. To avoid them self-seeding and to extend the flowering duration, you can choose to deadhead spent blossoms. Other than this, pruning is not necessary. The plants can be pruned back in the middle of the summer to encourage greater blossom development. The plant can be divided in the spring every two to three years.
