Flat-sedge is native to bright, open habitats where it flourishes in full sun. It can tolerate partial sun but favors direct sunlight for the best growth. This plant, which may be annual or biennial, is noted for its sun-loving nature.

Flat-sedge can tolerate a broad range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be constrained by various combinations of moisture and heat. It does best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or sustained high temperatures can increase the likelihood of Flat-sedge dying. In winter, protecting it from cold can improve the plant's survival.
