ON THIS PLANT

Dendrobium fimbriatum is a species of orchid. It is native to China, the Himalayas and Indochina. It grows on tree trunks in dense forests or on damp rocks in mountain valleys. It is known in Chinese as 流苏石斛.

A note from PlantMom

Fringed-lipped dendrobium is usually resistant to disease and encounters relatively few insect pests. Its care is considered difficult because it needs a high-humidity yet well-ventilated environment with few harmful pathogens. Too much watering can cause root rot. Although anyone can grow Fringed-lipped dendrobium, keeping it healthy and getting it to bloom again requires more growing experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Dendrobium Fimbriatum.

Light

Fringed-lipped dendrobium is native to habitats such as forest understories and rocky areas, where it occurs in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adapt to full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatile and hardy nature.

Temperature

Fringed-lipped dendrobium prefers warm conditions. It does best at moderately high temperatures and should avoid extremely hot, humid conditions. Sunlight warms the plant and stimulates flowering. However, extended direct sun in summer can cause sunburn, so the amount of light it receives should be managed during that season. The plant is generally intolerant of cold, so it needs suitable protection and warmer temperatures in winter to prevent freezing.

Fertilizer

Correct fertilization is essential for the health and appearance of the Fringed-lipped dendrobium. Fertilize the Fringed-lipped dendrobium during summer, repeating the application monthly throughout the season. The nutrients support growth and help maintain the plant’s parts. Fertilization improves the Fringed-lipped dendrobium’s floral display, ensuring the best blooms.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Fringed-lipped dendrobium, pick a pot that is only slightly bigger and offers good drainage, preferably a clear orchid pot. Use an orchid-specific, well-draining medium that includes bark or moss. Carefully clean the roots and cut away any that are dead or rotting. Repot after flowering, typically in spring or fall, water thoroughly, and keep the plant in bright, indirect light. Avoid disturbing the roots after repotting.
