Sweet mountain yam comes from habitats that receive abundant sunlight, such as open fields and sunny meadows. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Sweet mountain yam prefers moderate temperatures, about the same range people find comfortable. It does best when conditions are neither excessively hot nor too cold. The primary danger from high temperatures is sunburn, so providing some shade in summer is recommended to avoid overheating. When temperatures fall, the plant goes dormant. To maintain continuous growth, warmer conditions during winter are required. Frost can damage the plant and should be avoided.

Sweet mountain yam varieties benefit from one or two applications of organic natural fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus. Apply the fertilizer before planting, incorporate it into the soil, and water thoroughly. Usually a single application is adequate, but a second can be applied once seedlings are established. Avoid overapplying fertilizer to prevent damage to the plants.
