ON THIS PLANT

Dipterocarpus retusus, commonly known as hollong, is a large tree and perhaps the best known species in the genus Dipterocarpus. It is native to China, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and India. The tree, some 20–30 metres (70–100 ft) tall, is found in Cambodia in dense forests of the plains, common on hillsides and along rivers and in forests between 800 m (2,600 ft) and 1,500 m (5,000 ft) altitude.

Hollong is the state tree of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India, the timber is used for plywood and making various containers. In China, the timber is used in construction. Hollong is a sacred tree for Moran community of Assam.

A note from PlantMom

Dipterocarpus retusus is resistant to disease and is generally unlikely to develop illnesses. As for maintenance, this species is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and mature specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be trimmed after they finish blooming. Dipterocarpus retusus is appropriate for anyone who has outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and it does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Dipterocarpus Retusus.

Light

Dipterocarpus retusus is found naturally in habitats like forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It favors partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, illustrating its versatility and hardiness.

Temperature

Dipterocarpus retusus shows good temperature adaptability, tolerating higher heat and wide temperature swings. When conditions are hot, attention should be paid to watering and providing suitable shade to avoid sunburn. Conversely, Dipterocarpus retusus is relatively intolerant of low temperatures. While it can endure some cold, very low temperatures can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

Proper timing is essential when fertilizing Dipterocarpus retusus. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and provides energy during both dormant periods and phases of active growth.
