Edmondia sesamoides is a shrub that grows only 30 cm tall. The species is endemic to the Northern Cape and Western Cape where it is found in fynbos on sandstone slopes. The plant flowers from August to December.
Sewejaartjie shows strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish flowering. Sewejaartjiet is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior care experience.
How to keep Edmondia Sesamoides.
Light
Sewejaartjie is native to open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide plenty of light. It flourishes in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to different sunlight conditions.
Temperature
Sewejaartjie comes from tropical areas, where the climate is usually warm and humid. Consequently, it is adapted to high heat and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a consistent temperature, so avoiding temperature swings indoors is important. It typically cannot endure cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.
Fertilizer
The best time to fertilize a Sewejaartjie is in early spring as it comes out of dormancy. This stimulates overall growth and supports flower development. Fertilizing improves the foliage, stems, and branches, and encourages flowers that are large, vibrant, and long-lasting. It also helps move nutrients from the roots to the flowers and enhances the plant’s health and resistance to disease.
