Entada rheedei, commonly known as African dream herb or snuff box sea bean, and as the cacoon vine in Jamaica, is a large woody liana or climber of the Mimosa clade Mimosoideae. The vine can grow as long as 120 m (390 ft). Their seeds have a thick and durable seed coat which allows them to survive lengthy periods of immersion in seawater. These seeds come in a pod which can be up to 6.5 feet in length.

Care Guide

💧 Water

The African dream herb flourishes in tropical climates, particularly where there is heavy rainfall followed by dry spells. It needs to be watered every three weeks and is highly tolerant of drought conditions. When grown outdoors, mulching is beneficial as it helps retain soil moisture, which is crucial during the warm growing season.

☀️ Light Full sun

African dream herb originates from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest edges, which provide abundant light. It thrives in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 20–37.8°C

The African dream herb comes from tropical areas, which generally have warm, humid climates. Consequently, it is well adapted to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a stable temperature, so avoiding temperature fluctuations indoors is important. It usually cannot tolerate cold and needs higher temperatures for growth. If the surrounding temperature drops too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

✂️ Pruning

Prune the African Dream Herb in early spring to remove dead branches and encourage healthy growth. Light pruning will help maintain the plant's shape and promote air circulation, enhancing its vitality. Pruning at the right time, which coincides with its active growth phase, supports robust development without stressing the plant with heavy cuts.
