Epidendrum porphyreum prefers warm conditions. It does best in moderately high temperatures but not in extreme heat and humidity. Light warms the plant and encourages it to bloom. Still, long periods of direct sun in summer can cause sunburn, so the amount of sunlight should be regulated then. The plant generally tolerates cold poorly, so it needs sufficient protection and warmer conditions in winter to avoid freezing.

Epidendrum porphyreum needs the most fertilizer during its active growth period, which takes place mainly in spring, summer, and early fall.
