A note from PlantMom

Red hot poker tree has strong resistance to disease and is generally unlikely to develop illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When planted outdoors, it needs minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be trimmed after they finish blooming. Red hot poker tree is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Erythrina Abyssinica.

Light

The red hot poker tree comes from open habitats like sunny meadows and forest edges that offer plenty of light. It does best in full sun but can also tolerate partial sun, adapting well to different sunlight conditions.

Water

Native to regions with distinct wet and dry seasons, the red hot poker tree thrives in drier conditions and requires moderate watering, around twice a week. Indoors, its eye-catching blooms flourish when given the right care. To mimic its natural habitat and prevent root rot, be sure to use well-draining soil.

Temperature

The red hot poker tree comes from tropical areas, where the weather is usually warm and humid. Consequently, it is suited to high temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate abrupt temperature changes and prefers a steady temperature, so avoiding indoor temperature swings is important. It generally cannot endure cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

The best time to fertilize a Red hot poker tree is in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy. This encourages overall growth and flower development. Fertilization improves foliage, stems, and branches, and helps produce flowers that are larger, more vibrant, and longer-lasting. It also aids the movement of nutrients from the roots to the flowers and enhances the tree’s health and resistance to disease.

Pruning

The red hot poker tree produces vibrant blooms and thrives when pruned in early spring. By removing dead branches, you can encourage healthy growth and improve air circulation, which reduces the risk of diseases. This practice also promotes robust flowering and prevents the plant from becoming leggy. Remember to sterilize your tools to prevent infections and support vigorous growth.
