Eysenhardtia polystachya, the kidneywood, is a tree from Mexico, growing along forest edges and water courses at elevations of 150–3000 m. Previously it was used as a source of lignum nephriticum.
Mexican kidneywood shows strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. When planted outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger specimens typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Mexican kidneywoodt is suitable for anyone with an outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not require a lot of care experience.
How to keep Eysenhardtia Polystachya.
Light
Mexican kidneywood is native to open habitats, including sunny meadows and forest edges that provide plentiful light. It does best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to different sunlight conditions.
Temperature
Mexican kidneywood is fairly adaptable to temperature, able to endure high heat and wide temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, it’s important to ensure proper watering and provide suitable shade to prevent sunburn. However, it is relatively sensitive to low temperatures; although it can tolerate some cold, very cold conditions can cause frost damage.
Fertilizer
Proper timing is important when fertilizing Mexican kidneywood. Apply fertilizer in early spring and then monthly through early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
Pruning
Mexican kidneywood, celebrated for its fragrant white flowers and medicinal properties, benefits from pruning in early spring. Concentrate on removing dead wood and crowded branches to improve airflow. Light pruning also encourages compact growth. Always use clean, sharp tools to prevent the spread of disease.
