ON THIS PLANT

Garcinia cowa, commonly known as cowa fruit or cowa mangosteen is an evergreen plant with edible fruit native to Asia, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and southwest China. The tree is harvested from the wild for its edible fruits and leaves, which are used locally. Flowers are yellow, male & female flowers are separated.

A note from PlantMom

Cowa has strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it requires minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not need pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Cowa is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not require much experience in plant care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Garcinia Cowa.

Light

Cowa naturally occurs in habitats like forest understories and rocky areas, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatility and hardiness.

Temperature

Cowa comes from tropical areas, where the climate is usually warm and humid. Consequently, it is well adapted to high heat and moisture. It is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and prefers a constant temperature, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It generally cannot tolerate cold and needs warmer conditions to grow. If the environmental temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Select organic fertilizers (e.g., fish emulsion, compost) rather than chemical ones for Cowa. Supply higher amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus to young plants in spring. Work compost or fertilizer into the soil either before or after planting. For mature plants, add a balanced fertilizer or one aimed at specific deficiencies in spring. Nutrient deficiency results in small leaves, short branches, yellow or bronze foliage, acidic fruits, early fruit drop, and splitting.
