ON THIS PLANT

Gaultheria depressa, commonly known as the mountain snow berry or alpine wax berry, is a small ground hugging shrub of the heath family Ericaceae native to rocky alpine areas of Tasmania, Australia, and New Zealand.

A note from PlantMom

Mountain snow berry shows strong resistance to disease and is typically not susceptible to illnesses. As for care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When planted outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger specimens usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they finish blooming. Mountain snow berryt is well suited for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Gaultheria Depressa.

Light

As a species typical of landscapes bathed in bright light, mountain snow berry favors plentiful sun. It can tolerate lower light, but truly flourishes with stronger sunshine. Adequate sun exposure is essential for its vigorous growth; too little light can stunt development, while too much may scorch the leaves.

Water

The mountain snowberry thrives in moist, well-drained soil typical of alpine habitats and develops moderate drought tolerance once established. Water the plant every 2-3 weeks, making sure to allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. When grown outdoors, mulching around the plant can help retain moisture and mimic its natural environment.

Temperature

Mountain snow berry is a plant from temperate regions that thrives at temperatures of 59–100 °F (15–38 °C). To promote optimal growth, its environment should be kept within this temperature range, particularly during seasonal changes.

Fertilizer

Timing is essential when fertilizing Mountain snow berry. Start fertilizing in early spring and continue on a monthly schedule until early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth periods.

Pruning

The mountain snowberry is a low-growing shrub characterized by its dense foliage and bright berries. To maintain its shape and encourage growth, prune the shrub between early and late winter. Be sure to remove any dead branches to improve air circulation. Regular pruning not only enhances berry production but also helps to keep the plant healthy. Always use clean, sharp tools when pruning to minimize stress and reduce the risk of disease.
