ON THIS PLANT

Grevillea sericea, commonly known as the pink spider flower, is a shrub endemic to New South Wales, Australia.

A note from PlantMom

Red spider flower has strong disease resistance and is generally unlikely to suffer from diseases. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When planted outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. However, smaller plants should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Red spider flower is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and does not require much care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Grevillea Sericea.

Light

Red spider flower comes from open habitats, such as sunny meadows and forest margins, which offer abundant light. It does best in full sun but can also tolerate partial sun, adapting well to different sunlight levels.

Water

Silky grevillea is drought-tolerant once it is established, but benefits from additional watering during dry periods. After planting, water the plant twice a week for the first 2-3 weeks. Then, reduce the frequency to once a week for approximately a month. Adjust the watering schedule based on your local weather, decreasing the frequency as the conditions become cooler and wetter.

Temperature

The red spider flower tolerates a wide range of climate conditions, from sweltering summers to cold winters. However, it does have a preferred temperature range for healthy growth. When temperatures rise too high, the plant can suffer from heat and humidity stress, which may kill it. In areas where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, insulating measures should be taken to protect the plant.

Fertilizer

The timing of fertilizing the Red spider flower is important. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. Fertilizer encourages attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant periods and active growth.

Pruning

Pruning silky grevillea in the spring enhances its growth by promoting more abundant blooms and healthy new shoots. You can also prune it in warmer months to shape or resize the plant, although this might result in losing some flowers.
