Haworthia scabra

Haworthiopsis scabra is native to areas with dappled light, such as the understory of forests or rocky sites that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can also tolerate full sun.

Although Haworthiopsis scabra tolerates some heat, it mainly grows and does best in cooler seasons and goes dormant in summer. In very hot summer conditions it should be shaded to avoid scorching from strong sunlight. Watering ought to be reduced or stopped during the hottest period to prevent root rot. It grows vigorously in winter and spring and will keep growing steadily so long as temperatures do not fall too low.

For Haworthiopsis scabra, light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season are sufficient. Avoid feeding in winter and in summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for recently repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying any. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes blooms.

When repotting Haworthiopsis scabra, choose a pot slightly larger than the current one that has good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Gently remove the plant from its old pot, brush off excess soil, and plant it at the same depth. Wait a few days before watering so any root damage can heal. Repot in spring or fall and place it in a brightly lit spot.
