Heracleum sphondylium, commonly known as hogweed, common hogweed or cow parsnip, is a herbaceous perennial or biennial plant, in the umbelliferous family Apiaceae that includes fennel, cow parsley, ground elder and giant hogweed. It is native to Europe and Asia. The common name eltrot may also be applied, but is not specific to this species. Umbelliferous plants are so named because of the umbrella-like arrangement of flowers they produce. The North American species Heracleum maximum (also called "cow parsnip") is sometimes included as a subspecies of H. sphondylium. The plant provides a great deal of nectar for pollinators. It was rated in the top 10 for most nectar production (nectar per unit cover per year) in a UK plants survey conducted by the AgriLand project which is supported by the UK Insect Pollinators Initiative.
Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum has good resistance to diseases and is generally not prone to them. Still, it can be vulnerable to pests and illnesses present in its environment. These infections are generally mild. In terms of care, the plant requires a moderate level of maintenance. It should be pruned on a regular basis to keep a neat appearance and encourage healthy growth. Fertilizing can also aid in boosting flowering. Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum is well suited for anyone with outdoor areas such as a garden or patio and does not demand extensive gardening experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.
How to keep Heracleum Sibiricum.
Light
Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats and commonly thriving in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.
Temperature
Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, though its distribution may still be restricted by particular combinations of water availability and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures can raise the risk of Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can enhance the plant’s survival.
Fertilizer
One application of fertilizer in spring is generally enough for Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum, though repeated feedings can optimize growth. Feed once every month to a month and a half. Fertilization improves the leaves' appearance and function, helping maintain even color and a healthy texture. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake for the plant's long-term health.
