ON THIS PLANT

Hypochaeris robertia is a Mediterranean species of plants in the tribe Cichorieae within the family Asteraceae. It grows in the central Mediterranean (Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Italy and North Africa) at elevations of 300–2,700 metres (980–8,860 ft) above sea level. It flowers from spring to autumn. Each flower head is 18–22 millimetres (0.71–0.87 in) in diameter.

A note from PlantMom

Hypochaeris robertia is largely disease-resistant and typically not prone to illnesses. However, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These infections are usually mild. In terms of care, the plant needs moderate maintenance. Regular pruning is required to keep a good appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also help encourage flowering. Hypochaeris robertia is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience. It may need more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Hypochaeris Robertia.

Light

Hypochaeris robertia is a sun-loving, perennial herbaceous plant native to open habitats and commonly found in meadows and grasslands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Water

Hypochaeris robertia flourishes best in consistently moist soil, which mirrors the regular weekly rainfall of its native habitat. To maintain the necessary moisture levels, it should be watered weekly. When grown as an outdoor plant in temperate regions, it is crucial for its leaves to efficiently capture rain, especially during the growing season, to ensure optimal health and vitality.

Temperature

Hypochaeris robertia can tolerate a broad range of temperatures, though its range may still be restricted by particular combinations of moisture and heat. It grows best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Long spells of cloudy, rainy weather or extended high temperatures increase the plant’s chance of dying. In winter, shielding it from cold can boost its survival rate.

Fertilizer

Usually one fertilizer application in spring is enough for Hypochaeris robertia, though several feedings can maximize growth. Feed every month to six weeks. Fertilization improves the leaves’ appearance and function, keeping color even and texture healthy. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake for long-term plant health.

Pruning

Hypochaeris robertia is characterized by its feathery leaves and bright yellow flowers. For optimal growth, prune the plant from early to late spring by removing dead foliage and faded flowers. Additionally, thin out any crowded areas to improve air circulation. These practices not only enhance the plant's appearance but also boost its resistance to diseases, ensuring that Hypochaeris robertia thrives throughout its growth cycle.
