ON THIS PLANT

Leontice leontopetalum, commonly known as leontice, lion's foot, lion's turnip, and lion's leaf, is a perennial geophyte having a wide distribution, and growing primarily in semi-desert regions. The name "lion's foot" is derived from from the Greek λεοντοπέταλη [= "lioness"] in reference to a fancied resemblance between the shape of the leaves and the pads of a lioness’s paw.

A note from PlantMom

Lion's leaf shows strong resistance to diseases and is generally not highly susceptible to them. Nevertheless, it can be vulnerable to pests and illnesses present in its environment. Such infections tend to be mild. Regarding maintenance, this plant has moderate care needs. It should be pruned regularly to preserve an attractive appearance and support healthy growth. Applying fertilizer can also encourage flowering. Lion's leaf is well suited for anyone with outdoor areas like a garden or patio and does not demand extensive gardening experience. When cultivated indoors, it may call for extra attention.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Leontice Leontopetalum.

Light

Lion's leaf originates from habitats like forest understories or rocky sites, where it is subject to natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable and hardy nature.

Temperature

Lion's leaf can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, though its distribution may still be restricted by different combinations of water and heat. It performs best in warm summer conditions with sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather and prolonged high temperatures increase the risk of Lion's leaf dying. In winter, adequate protection from cold can boost the plant's survival rate.

Fertilizer

The primary time to fertilize Lion's leaf is in early spring, when flowers are forming. The appropriate fertilizer encourages improved blooms and helps Lion's leaf produce attractive flowers. Fertilizing in early spring ensures excellent flowering during the season and supplies energy for dormant phases of growth.
