Lithops helmutii

Originating from dry areas, Lithops helmutii does best in full sun, since its native habitat has intense sunlight and very little shade. It will also tolerate partial sun, providing some flexibility in its growth.

While Lithops helmutii can tolerate some heat, it mainly does best and grows during the cooler seasons and goes dormant in summer. In hot summer temperatures, provide shade to prevent scorching from intense sunlight. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest season to avoid root rot. Winter and spring are when Lithops helmutii grows vigorously. As long as the temperature does not drop too low, it will continue to grow steadily.

This plant prefers dry conditions, so don't mist it. However, watering it less often can also thrive in higher humidity.

For Lithops helmutii, applying fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season is sufficient. Avoid fertilizing in winter and summer when it is dormant. Reduce the amount of fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before fertilizing. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and encourages blooms.

When repotting Lithops helmutii, pick a pot slightly larger than the current one that provides good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Gently remove the plant from its old container, brush off excess soil, and place it at the same depth. Wait a few days before watering to allow any root damage to heal. Repot in spring or fall, and keep the plant in a brightly lit spot.
