Description

Source: leafsnap

Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering species in the family Magnoliaceae. Magnolias are however one of the most primitive plants in evolutionary history and fossil records show that magnolias once existed in Europe, North America and Asia over 100 million years ago. Today they are indigenous only in Southern China and the Southern United States. Magnolias range from 8-foot multi-stemmed shrub trees to specimens 70 feet tall, with a horizontal spread of 50 feet. The flowers may be pale pink to bright fuchsia in color. Magnolia is used for weight loss, problems with digestion, constipation, inflammation, anxiety, stress, depression, fever, headache, stroke, and asthma.

🌡️ Temperature

Southern magnolia grows in warm temperate to subtropical climates (2). The frost-free period is at least 210 days and is more than 240 days for much of the range. Average January temperatures along the coast are 9° to 12° C (49° to 54° F) in South Carolina and Georgia and 11° to 21° C (52° to 70° F) in Florida. It does poorly in wet surroundings and does require a humidity level of 30-50%.

✂️ Pruning

Deciduous magnolias should be pruned between midsummer and early fall. Over pruning, even on a young tree, can cause stress. With any magnolia, it is better to aim on the side of pruning too little than too much. Light trimming a magnolia tree is always preferable.

☠️ Toxicity

No magnolia is poisonous to dogs or cats. However, diligence is necessary when adding plants to your garden, as there are many trees and shrubs that can make Fluffy or Fido very ill. Seek medical care for your pet right away if you believe he has ingested any part of a poisonous plant.
