ON THIS PLANT

Metrosideros carminea (Carmine rātā, Crimson rātā or in Māori akakura) is a forest liane or vine that is endemic to New Zealand. It occurs in coastal and lowland forest from Te Paki in the north of the North Island south to Māhia Peninsula and Taranaki. It is one of a number of New Zealand Metrosideros species which live out their lives as vines, unlike the northern rata (M.robusta), which generally begins as a hemi-epiphyte and grows into a huge tree.

A note from PlantMom

Crimson rata shows strong resistance to disease and is usually not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning; however, smaller plants should be trimmed after they have finished blooming. Crimson ratat is well suited to anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not require much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Metrosideros Carminea.

Light

Crimson rata is native to habitats like forest understories and rocky locations, where it grows in naturally shaded settings. It favors partial sun but can adjust to full sun or full shade, showing its adaptable and hardy character.

Temperature

Crimson rata is fairly adaptable to temperature, tolerating higher heat and wide temperature fluctuations. In hot weather, attention should be given to watering and providing adequate shade to prevent sunburn. Conversely, Crimson rata has relatively low tolerance for cold. While it can endure some chill, excessively cold conditions may cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

The timing of fertilizing Crimson rata is important. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue once a month through early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and gives the plant energy during both dormant and active growth periods.
