ON THIS PLANT

Metrosideros perforata, also known as white rata, climbing rata, akatea or Akatorotoro, is one of twelve Metrosideros species endemic to New Zealand. It is one of three white flowering rātā vines (the others being large white rātā and white rātā). An example of a specific location of occurrence is within New Zealand's Hamilton Ecological District in association with such alliant understory plants as Blechnum discolor, Blechnum filiforme and Doodia media.

A note from PlantMom

White rata shows strong resistance to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When planted outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. White rata is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand much prior gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Metrosideros Perforata.

Light

White rata needs a lot of sunlight to do well, though it can endure some periods with reduced light. Its natural habitat receives plentiful sun. A lack of light can slow or restrict its growth, while too much sun can possibly cause damage. Its sunlight requirements may change at different stages of development.

Temperature

White rata shows good temperature adaptability, tolerating high heat and wide temperature fluctuations. In hot conditions, be attentive to watering and provide suitable shade to prevent sunburn. Conversely, White rata is relatively sensitive to low temperatures. While it can endure some cold, very low temperatures can cause frost damage.

Fertilizer

The timing of fertilizing White rata is important. Apply fertilizer in early spring and repeat monthly through early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and supplies energy during both dormant and active growth phases.
