Crocodile Fern (Microsorum musifolium) is perfect for both newcomers and seasoned collectors. It features colorful foliage and is a popular choice among fern enthusiasts. This plant produces several frond clusters ranging in size from 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 cm). The leaves have a beautiful green tint with a network of dark green veins running through them. The end effect resembles crocodile scales, thus the name. It is native to Southeast Asia and portions of Australia are finicky about its surroundings and prefer humid tropical climates. Although they are sluggish growers, they may reach a height of 5 feet and make excellent display pieces. It may grow up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and broad in its natural environment of tropical woods, but when cultivated as an indoor plant, it has a more controlled growth pattern and seldom exceeds 2 feet in height (60 cm).

Care Guide

💧 Water 2 to 3 times a week

Crocodile ferns thrive in the humid conditions typical of tropical rainforests. To keep them healthy, water them twice a week and mist them regularly to mimic their native humidity. Although this epiphytic plant can tolerate moderate drought, it needs consistent moisture to maintain vibrant growth.

Suggested frequency: 2 to 3 times a week
☀️ Light Full shade

Crocodile fern is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas that provide natural shade. Its preferred light condition is Full Shade, though it can tolerate Partial Sun.

Ideal: Full shade
🌡️ Temperature 20–37.8°C

The crocodile fern comes from tropical areas, where conditions are generally warm and humid. As a result, it is adapted to high temperatures and moisture. It does not tolerate sudden temperature changes and prefers a steady temperature environment, so avoiding indoor temperature fluctuations is important. It typically cannot endure cold and requires warmer conditions to grow. If the ambient temperature falls too low, the plant’s growth may stop or it may die.

Ideal temperature: 20–37.8°C
💨 Humidity normal (40-60%)

This plant will thrive in moderate humidity, which is probably the level in your home. However, misting it a few times a week can be very beneficial. Make sure the room has good ventilation.

🌱 Fertilizer

Your Crocodile Fern is a low-maintenance plant. Fertilizer should only be used in the spring and summer. Once every two weeks, apply a diluted universal fertilizer. For this plant, a balanced nutrient ratio, such as 10-10-10, is preferable. Reduce fertilizer use from mid-autumn until the end of the winter. Crocodile fern grows significantly more slowly in the winter. It will thus require fewer nutrients. Fertilizer salts will build up in the soil if the fern is fed in the winter. This can cause the roots to burn, providing a breeding ground for pests and illnesses.

🪴 Pot & Repot 2-3 years

When repotting Crocodile fern, select a pot 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with ample drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, ensuring the root ball sits slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.

Suggested frequency: 2-3 years
✂️ Pruning

Crocodile Ferns are low-maintenance plants. You just need to remove the older leaves from the bottom now and then. Using a pair of gardening scissors, cut them out. As the plant becomes older, the older leaves will begin to turn yellow. Trimming the older leaves allows for greater new growth while also improving air circulation around the fronds. You'll also lower your chances of subsequently getting fungal infections this way. You should also wipe the crocodile fern leaves with a moist towel once a week. Any leaf shine products should be avoided since they will badly harm the fronds.
