Neostapfia is a genus of endemic Californian bunchgrasses, in the subfamily Chloridoideae of the grass family, Poaceae. The only known species is Neostapfia colusana, with the common name Colusa grass.
Colusa grass demonstrates strong disease resistance and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs minimal watering, and larger plants usually do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Colusa grass is suitable for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not demand extensive care experience.
How to keep Neostapfia Colusana.
Light
Colusa grass originates in bright, open habitats and thrives in full sun. It can tolerate partial sun but performs best with direct sunlight for optimal growth. This annual or biennial plant is noted for its sun-loving nature.
Temperature
Colusa grass can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, though its distribution may still be restricted by various combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with adequate rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather or prolonged high temperatures can make Colusa grass more likely to die. In winter, protecting the plant from cold can increase its chances of survival.
Pruning
Prune Colusa grass between early to late spring to remove dead stems and encourage healthy growth. This timing aligns with the grass's active growth phase, promoting quicker recovery and reducing the risk of disease. Make sure to use clean, sharp tools for effective pruning and to maintain the best plant structure.
