Opuntia pubescens is a drought-tolerant plant well-suited for arid climates, where it stores water in its tissues to survive dry periods. It should be watered every three weeks and thrives when placed outdoors in full sunlight. This plant prefers regions that experience infrequent but intense rainfall, which mirrors its natural watering cycle.

Native to dry areas, the Velvet Bur Cactus thrives in full sun, its natural habitat marked by intense sunlight and very little shade. It also tolerates partial sun, giving it some flexibility in how it grows.

Velvet Bur Cactus does best in warm conditions and needs higher temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolic activity. It prefers plenty of sunlight, suitable moisture levels, and good air circulation. However, it can be damaged by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It's also important to maintain a balance and avoid both excessive heat and overly dry conditions.

For Velvet Bur Cactus, small amounts of fertilizer applied one to two times a year during the growing season are enough. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on feeding for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before you fertilize. Fertilization promotes healthy growth and helps encourage blooms.

Opuntia pubescens has thick, segmented stems that require regular care. To promote growth and maintain its shape, prune the plant in early spring. Use clean tools to remove any damaged segments, and thin out overcrowded areas to improve air circulation.
