ON THIS PLANT

Phacelia fimbriata, the fringed phacelia, is a spring flowering wildflower of the genus Phacelia found in the highland woods of southeastern United States including the Great Smoky Mountains.

A note from PlantMom

Miami mist is fairly resistant to disease and usually does not fall victim to illnesses. That said, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These problems are typically minor. For care, this plant needs moderate attention. It should be pruned regularly to keep a neat appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also encourage more flowering. Miami mist suits anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive care experience. When grown indoors, however, it may need extra care.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Phacelia Fimbriata.

Light

Miami mist is found in places with dappled light, such as forest understories or rocky sites that provide natural shade. It does best in partial sun but can also tolerate full sun.

Temperature

Miami mist is native to climates with temperatures from 68 to 95 °F (20 to 35 ℃). In spring and autumn, maintain the plant within that temperature range. In winter, if temperatures drop below 68 °F (20 ℃), provide extra warmth.

Fertilizer

When most of the Miami mist flowers have fully opened, resume fertilizing. During the peak bloom period, feed the plant every three to four weeks, weather permitting. Once Miami mist begins producing fewer new blooms, stop fertilizing; there’s no need to feed it when it can no longer produce more blooms.

Pruning

Fringed phacelia produces unique flowers with fringed edges, making it an excellent choice for ornamental gardening. For optimal growth, prune the plant from early to late spring. Concentrate on removing spent blooms and trimming weak stems. This practice improves air circulation and reduces the risk of disease. Always use clean, sharp tools to ensure minimal stress on the plant and to make precise cuts.
