Heteromeles arbutifolia (; more commonly by Californian botanists), commonly known as toyon, is a common perennial shrub native to extreme southwest Oregon, California, Baja California, and British Columbia. It is the sole species in the genus Heteromeles. Toyon is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats. It is also known by the common names Christmas berry and California holly.

🌳 The toyon is more than a visually appealing plant; it has a distinct role during the festive season. Its bright red berries and evergreen foliage make it a popular choice for Christmas wreaths and decorations. This use is rooted in tradition and reflects a rich cultural appreciation for the plant. Although not widely known, the berries were historically used by native populations to make a fermented beverage, indicating its untapped potential in culinary applications.

Care Guide

💧 Water
☀️ Light Full sun

Toyon thrives when it has access to pure, all-day sunlight, but it can still live in areas with limited sunlight, although this could impede its ideal growth. Its indigenous habitats consistently demonstrate this preference for light. Too much shade could lead to poor health, whereas too much sunlight is usually tolerated well.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 15–35°C

Toyon thrives in temperatures ranging from 59 to 95 ℉ (15 to 35 ℃). This species originates from areas with temperate climates and it favors mild temperatures. For indoor care, it is recommended to modify the temperature based on varying seasons to adhere to its preferred temperature scope.
