Portulaca lutea, the native yellow purslane, is a species of Portulaca that is indigenous to all of the main islands of Hawaii except for Kaua'i and is widespread throughout the Pacific Islands.

Care Guide

💧 Water

Native yellow purslane is a drought-tolerant plant that requires different watering schedules depending on the season. In spring and fall, water it once or twice a week. During the summer, increase to two or three times a week. In winter, water it only once every 15 days. Always water in small amounts to prevent root rot, and adjust the timing as necessary for each season.

☀️ Light Full sun

Native to dry areas, Native yellow purslane does best in full sun; its natural habitat has intense sunlight and little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, giving it some flexibility in how it grows.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 20–37.8°C

Native yellow purslane does best in warm conditions and requires relatively high temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolism. It prefers plenty of sunlight, suitable moisture levels, and good air circulation. It can be damaged by excessively low temperatures and by overwatering. Likewise, very high heat and overly dry conditions should also be avoided.

🌱 Fertilizer

Native yellow purslane only needs light fertilizer applications once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on fertilizer for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying any. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and helps encourage blooms.

✂️ Pruning

Yellow purslane is characterized by its fleshy leaves and bright yellow flowers. For the best results, prune this plant between early and late spring. Focus on removing any damaged or overcrowded stems to improve airflow and encourage blooming. Be careful not to prune too heavily, as this can stress the plant. By following these steps, you will help maintain the plant's shape and vigor, promoting abundant flowering.
