Description

Source: leafsnap

Potamogeton obtusifolius, known as blunt-leaved pondweed, is an aquatic plant in the genus Potamogeton. It grows mainly in mesotrophic to eutrophic lakes, ponds and ditches, rarely in brackish water. It occurs primarily in Central Europe, the British Isles, Fennoscandia and eastern North America.

Care Guide

💧 Water
☀️ Light Full sun

Bluntleaf pondweed occurs in habitats with abundant sunlight, such as the shallow margins of ponds and lakes. It prefers full sun, although it can tolerate partial sun.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 5–35°C

Bluntleaf pondweed can adjust to a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution may still be constrained by various combinations of water availability and heat. It grows best in warm summer climates when there is sufficient rainfall or watering. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, and prolonged high temperatures, can increase the chance that Bluntleaf pondweed will die. In winter, adequate protection from cold can improve the plant's survival.

✂️ Pruning

Bluntleaf pondweed flourishes in aquatic environments and is easily identified by its blunt-tipped leaves. To encourage optimal growth, it is best to prune it from early to late spring. This helps manage its spread and improve water quality. Be sure to cut back any decaying stems to promote new growth and use clean tools to avoid causing damage. This practice supports the overall health of the pond ecosystem.
