Source: leafsnap

Rubus setosus, the bristly blackberry, is a North American species of flowering plant in the rose family. It is widespread in much of central and eastern Canada (from Ontario to Newfoundland) and the northeastern and north-central United States (from New England west to Minnesota and south as far as North Carolina)Rubus setosus is a prickly shrub up to 150 cm (4.9 ft) tall. Leaves are palmately compound with 3 or 5 leaflets. Flowers are white. Fruit is black, nearly spherical. The genetics of Rubus is extremely complex, so that it is difficult to decide on which groups should be recognized as species. There are many rare species with limited ranges such as this. Further study is suggested to clarify the taxonomy.

Care Guide

💧 Water
☀️ Light Partial sun

Setose blackberry occurs naturally in habitats like forest understories or rocky sites, where it grows in natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun or full shade, illustrating its hardy and adaptable nature.

Ideal: Partial sun
🌡️ Temperature 0–32.2°C

The Setose blackberry is highly adaptable to different climates, from very hot summers to cold winters. Nevertheless, it has an optimal temperature range for growth. If temperatures become too high, the plant can suffer from heat and humidity stress, which may kill it. Where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, applying insulation to protect the plant is advisable.

🌱 Fertilizer

The Setose blackberry plant needs adequate nutrients to achieve optimal fruit production. Apply fertilizer in early spring to encourage new growth and flower development. Regular feeding keeps the plant healthy, results in more flavorful fruit, and prevents nutrient-deficiency problems like yellowing leaves and poor fruit set.
